What Drives Gum Arabic Prices
Gum arabic prices are driven by supply from the Sahel belt (Sudan, Chad, Nigeria) and demand from the food and beverage industry. As E414, gum arabic is an essential emulsifier used by major beverage companies including Coca-Cola. Sudan has historically dominated supply, but political instability has disrupted exports.
Nigerian gum arabic has gained market share as an alternative source. Quality grading (hand-picked Grade 1 vs. mechanical Grade 2) significantly affects pricing. Food-grade certification and traceability documentation are essential for premium pricing.
Seasonal Pricing Pattern
Gum arabic is harvested during the dry season (November-June) when trees are tapped. Peak supply arrives from January to April. Prices are lowest during peak harvest and rise through the wet season when collection stops. Sudanese supply disruptions can cause sharp, unpredictable price spikes at any time.
Recent Price Trend
Gum arabic prices have firmed in 2025-2026, partly due to continued supply disruptions from Sudan. Nigerian product has seen increased demand as buyers diversify their sourcing to reduce geopolitical risk.
